Because it is the “month of love”, today we’d be featuring/ peaking through the love story of a very cute Australian Filipina couple, Mia and Adam.
I’m a sucker for romance. I really like it when people share the story of how they met their significant other and the story of their love. It makes me feel really happy and giddy listening to them. I mean, don’t you? My favourite love stories to hear are those of Australian Filipino couples because I, myself, am in one so it’s close to heart. If you can relate to most of the above, then Mia and Adam’s love story (narrated by Mia herself) would for sure put a smile on your face. Happy Valentine’s Day!
A bit about Adam and I (Mia)
It’s always been my dream to come here since I have relatives who migrated here when I was young. I’m one of two siblings. I came to Australia via student visa in 2013 and I lived with relatives until I got my PR (permanent residency) in 2017. Not long after that, I met Adam. Adam was born and raised in Adelaide and is one of three siblings.
The first time we met
I was single when I came to Australia and never went out on a date. That was until Adam and I met at work in 2017. We got introduced by our workmates. It was awkward at the start as we were surrounded by colleagues at work. I’m a very shy person and gets socially anxious when meeting someone for the first time. I’m sure Adam was a bit shy too but he’s always bright and smiles all the time. Adam is known by many of our colleagues because of his friendly and kind nature. A lot of people at work call him Mr. Smiling Face 🙂.
Then the relationship began
Our relationship started through talking at work and chatting online. After some time, we started going out for lunches since we both worked late shifts. Some weekends, Adam would come to spend time and get to know my relatives here in Adelaide or I go over to their place to spend time with his family, but we always make sure that we have some time apart to spend with ourselves because we see each other at work as well.

And of course there were challenges
It was awkward at the beginning of our relationship, and a lot of adjustments had to be made but we worked things out. The biggest challenge I find is the language difference. There are some Tagalog (language used in the Philippines) words that I find explaining in English difficult. Or it changes the meaning if translated to English.
But here we are now
Adam and I both still live in Adelaide as we love how chill and laid back it is. We have been to other states and we have a favourite that we always go back to but Adelaide is home. When it comes to my favourite thing about our relationship, I’ll be so biased and say that everything is my favourite 😄. I love the good days, the not so good days and everything in between. But my most favourite thing is how much Adam loves my family as much as I love them.
My advice for Australian Filipina couples
I’m no expert in giving advice but Adam and I believe that communication is the most important aspect in a relationship. Work out your differences and compromise.

About the “Your Aussie Story” series:
Immigrants in Australia, though from different cultures and backgrounds, tend to have similar experiences and common ‘struggles’ as they build their new life here in Australia. Through My Aussie Story, I’ve been trying to help out people like myself to be able to navigate the Australian way of life a little bit easier by sharing my own experiences.
I’ve always believed that every migrant’s journey would be less challenging if we learn from each other. This is why we’ve created Your Aussie Story. Your Aussie Story is a ‘series’ in our website where we feature inspiring stories of immigrants in Australia.
